Bigger, Better and Deadlier Reptile World

Port Elizabeth’s newest family and tourism hotspot, The Boma Reptile World, had its official opening on Tuesday, 8th of June. Dr Bill Branch, world renowned herpetologist, was there to do the honours of cutting the ribbon.

“The Boma Reptile World has grown from strength to strength. Visitors get to meet and interact with our large variety of snakes, and they love holding and touching the friendly reptiles and learning more about the venomous ones. ” said Ralph Dirsuwei, owner of The Boma Reptile World.

The Boma Reptile World started out in a much smaller reptile house in 2008. Due to the growth in popularity and a larger variety of reptiles, the decision was made to build a bigger reptile house that allows for a more entertaining visit to the park. The reptile park currently houses over 47 species of snakes, lizards, geckos and tortoises. Head curator, Mark Marshall, ensures that tours are up close and personal and appeal to both adults and children.

The Boma, which has served as a popular function venue for many years, recently opened a country restaurant so that visitors can also enjoy a meal during their visit to The Boma Reptile World. “The Boma makes for a perfect family outing – those interested in reptiles can explore The Boma Reptile World, while those who don’t like snakes can relax and enjoy a country meal in our beautiful forest garden restaurant “ says Ralph. “The Boma Reptile World is also extremely popular for children’s birthday parties and educational school groups,” he continues.

The Boma Reptile World and country restaurant is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 2-4pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 10am - 3pm. Reptile demonstrations take place every weekend at 11am and 2pm. Entrance to The Boma restaurant is free and tickets for Reptile World cost R30 per adult and R15 per child.
